The National Commission on Women's Affairs and Family-Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan congratulates Aiman Umarova on receiving the 2024 Stephanus Award—a well-deserved recognition of her relentless efforts and strong spirit. Aiman Umarova, a member of the National Commission and a lawyer distinguished by her indomitable courage, received the Stephanus Award for 2024 for defending the rights of those often overlooked by society.
Since 2005, the Norwegian human rights organization Stefanus Alliance International has awarded the Stephanus Prize to those who have made significant contributions to the protection of freedom of religion and belief (FORB).
Bishop Ingeborg Midttomme, who chairs the award committee, highlighted Aiman Umarova's contribution: "For many years, Aiman has been the voice for those who cannot defend themselves. She has championed the interests of the most vulnerable populations, creating a support network that continues her initiatives."
Aiman Umarova is renowned for her uncompromising defense of human rights in Kazakhstan, including protection against persecution under extremism and terrorism laws, and safeguarding religious minorities from discrimination. “Aiman Umarova is a true role model. She not only bravely defends human rights in Kazakhstan but also stands against injustice on the international stage,” notes Ed Brown, Secretary General of Stefanus Alliance International.
