On December 11, 2024, a training seminar titled “Foundations of Gender Equality” was held at the UN building in Astana. The event was attended by secretaries of regional commissions on women’s affairs and family and demographic policy under the akims of Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, and the regions, as well as advisors to akims on gender policy. The seminar was based on the certified “I Know Gender” course developed by the UN Women headquarters to promote gender equality principles.
The seminar was opened by Acting Head of the UN Women Office in Kazakhstan Dina Amrisheva, Deputy Chair of the National Commission for Women Affairs, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Elena Tarasenko, and Head of the Secretariat of the National Commission Gauhar Nurakhmetova. The speakers emphasized the importance of state initiatives aimed at strengthening gender equality and called on participants to jointly seek solutions to pressing issues.
In the second session, member of the National Commission and head of the communications agency “NazymPR,” Nazym Zhangazinova, delivered a presentation on “The Role of Mass Media in Expanding Women’s Rights and Opportunities.” She highlighted the potential of mass media in promoting gender equality and offered effective solutions for overcoming gender stereotypes in media.
Muslim Khasenov, member of the National Commission and associate professor at the Higher School of Law of Maqsut Narikbayev University, focused his presentation on gender legislation analysis and the priority directions of the Family and Gender Policy Concept of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2030. He stressed the importance of integrating international experience with national measures to achieve gender equality.
In the third session, assistant professor of the Department of Kazakh Language and Turkic Studies at Nazarbayev University, Zhazira Agabekova, shared a scientific perspective on gender issues in society, providing valuable insights into modern trends in gender research.
In the fourth session, Communications and Advocacy Specialist for UN Women in Kazakhstan Dinara Kusain delivered a presentation on the structure of gender relations. She emphasized the aspects of gender equality and encouraged participants to engage in collaborative efforts on the topic.
In the final session, Dinara Kusain addressed the key components of gender mainstreaming and invited participants to discuss international practices.
During the seminar, participants explored new ideas and initiatives to achieve gender equality and developed concrete proposals for regional implementation. This event made a significant contribution to strengthening cooperation between state bodies and regional commissions.
