On October 11, 2024, with the support of the National Commission for Women Affairs, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and as part of a joint project between UNESCO and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a training seminar was held in Astana. The seminar aimed to promote the principles of quality physical education, foster a culture of health, and enhance physical activity among youth.
The seminar brought together physical education teachers as well as employees from the departments of education, healthcare, tourism, and sports.
“President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev consistently emphasizes the importance of paying special attention to children, their active lifestyle, physical activity, and the development of mass sports and physical culture. It is essential to balance both theoretical preparation and physical activity for children and youth. Since 2023, for the second year in a row, we have been holding events in partnership with UNESCO as part of the ‘Quality Physical Education’ project. The project includes developing a policy on quality physical education, improving approaches to physical education classes, enhancing human resources, and training physical education teachers. Similar seminars were previously held in the West Kazakhstan and Kostanay regions”, noted Elena Tarasenko, Deputy Chair of the National Commission for Women Affairs, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
As part of the seminars, additional sessions were organized with UNESCO club members and students studying to become physical education teachers.
“The future of the nation depends on a healthy and active youth. Within the framework of UNESCO’s global initiative ‘Fit for Life,’ the ‘Quality Physical Education Policy in Kazakhstan’ project was initiated. Through this project, we have developed a policy and conducted an in-depth analysis of the physical education system in the country. Special attention is given to gender equality and inclusiveness in the process of enhancing the qualifications of teachers. Today’s seminar, the third of its kind, includes specialists in physical education and methodologists, who are being offered new teaching methods. In addition, a session with professional athletes is being held to motivate youth to lead a more active lifestyle and engage in physical education”, emphasized Maksat Baybekov, Program Director of the Social and Human Sciences Sector at the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty.
The seminar was organized by the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty, the National Scientific and Practical Center for Physical Culture under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, and the Kazakhstan National Federation of UNESCO Clubs. The seminar was held with the support of the National Commission for Women Affairs, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO.
