On May 22–23, 2025, an international conference titled “The Nexus Between Gender Equality and Climate Change” was held in Mongolia, jointly organized by the Asian Development Bank, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Mongolia, and the National Committee on Gender Equality.

Representing the Republic of Kazakhstan, Dr. Laura Karabasova, Member of the National Commission for Women Affairs, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Rector of Aktobe Regional University, took part in the event. During the panel session, Dr. Karabasova delivered a comprehensive overview of Kazakhstan’s experience and initiatives in climate adaptation and gender mainstreaming.

She emphasized that Kazakhstan’s climate adaptation strategy is focused on:
● Fostering women’s leadership in environmental sectors,
● Integrating green economy principles, smart climate practices, and renewable energy into higher education curricula,
● And preserving and revitalizing traditional ecological knowledge.

Kazakhstan's case illustrates the active engagement of women in addressing climate crises and their key roles in agriculture, ecology, and entrepreneurship. Special attention was drawn to Kazakhstan’s targeted programs supporting female entrepreneurs and advancing women’s business initiatives, which were presented as scalable models of best practice for the entire Central Asian region.

A central theme of the conference was the empowerment of women in the face of climate change, including their participation in decision-making processes. The National Commission for Women Affairs was noted for its critical role in this area.

Dr. Karabasova also reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to international obligations in the field of sustainable development and gender equality.

This international forum marked a significant step in strengthening Kazakhstan’s regional leadership and responsibility in promoting climate resilience and gender-responsive development.
